What about congregations who have no elders and deacons? Our "leaders" are a young preacher and other much older men who either have memory problems, health problems, or are not knowledgeable in the scriptures. We have an attendance of about 40, so there is no one to really lead here. Just what do we do?

Great question. And unfortunately, been there, done that as the young preacher.

If I had it to do over again as the mid 20s preacher, I would spend all my time for the first year or two in visiting and hospitality to build people’s trust and show them I’m there for them. That builds credibility that will be needed when it comes time to drive change. It’s a heavy weight, but in the absence of qualified leadership the job is on his shoulders just as it was Timothy’s.

As for everybody else - do all you can to encourage him and build him up if he’s sound in the Word. The more support he feels, the more confidence he’ll have to do what needs to be done.
