I’ve heard people refer to the “steps of salvation” as if it were, in and of itself, a point of doctrine, or a mantra. The t-shirt idea is cute. Might be a conversation starter at that.
I think I may have commented this before, but in our Wednesday night bible study we are learning about the Reformation and we were specifically talking about the restoration of the church through men like Stone and Campbell and Sir Walter Scott.
It was one of those men I believe, who was writing on children's hands specific Bible things so that they would go home and tell their parents to come to the gospel meeting that was being held. And since children have five fingers it wasn't exactly written as hear believe repent confess be baptized, but there were originally six things, three that we do and three that God does but he shortened it down to five to match up with the five fingers and then over time it changed into the five we know.
But there's a whole lot that happens after we are baptized, more than just going to church assembly. Serving God, being living sacrifices, Walking in the light, keeping ourselves unspotted from the world, making our body and body parts slaves to righteousness, keeping ourselves from the Love of money, these are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head. But they only come from studying the scriptures.
But honestly, I would say that I was raised to probably believe that step number six would be sing to God without musical instruments. 😆
P.s. related to that, serving the lord and being living sacrifices are both things that please the Lord, but recent Bible translations added the word worship in to Romans 12:1 and Hebrews 12:28, so that many in the Churches of Christ believe that these verses teach that it is worship that pleases God, instead of serving God and being living sacrifices. My prayer is that more in the Churches of Christ would become aware of this translation change that started in 1952. ❤️
"So, faithful living is fully implied when each item on the list is understood properly."
I would argue, that faithful living actually implies the list more than the list implies faithful living. When you understand what faith is, the alignment of your will and God's will, then everything that needs to happen occurs under faithful living. Where the list is a wordy way of saying a little bit less.
I used to think Romans 10:17 was just stating the obvious, but if you think about it, it's a really good verse to use when we talk about where faith actually comes from, especially when we're talking with our Calvinist friends.
