I can easily see how this could be applied to any hobby or passion a person may have, and granted, it is good solid advice. But..., I am compelled to add that there are good choices for hobbies and passions, and where one spend's their time, and well, some not so good. I enjoy sports, I love playing and competing in just about anything, but putting time into following over paid athletes, many of whom are not good role models, especially these days, is time not spent well. I know it is just my opinion, but the major sports leagues get way too much money and it has corrupted college and even high school athletics. Too much emphasis on organizations that corrupt society. I don't support them.

We all need to be discussing with our children/teens some of these so-called role models in sports as well as the teams and leagues that support them… As an example, I put forward Colin Kaepernick… Bending the knee during the national anthem… Having drag queens come out during baseball games… etc…

I was a fair bit older in 1998 than 9, and I do remember that loss. I also remember the win earlier in the year, when they finally got their first Super Bowl win. Sports, that team specifically, did get in the way of God, church, my family. I didn't admit that until some more years past.

These types of hobbies/interests can easily take over our time and attention. It does sap our time, energy and emotions. One day, my friend said he wasn't going to let a team or game rule his emotions anymore. That stuck out to me. Then my wife said she didn't like being around when I watched. That was hard to hear. And so God began a change in me. But many of the men around, even in the church, are obsessed.

O Lord, help us to keep our minds fixed on things above and not merely things below!

It really is sobering to see how it affects those around us, isn't it?

I agree with John in his comment, this could be applied to many things we find ourselves "busy" with.
